Set up Google Search Console (step by step)

Get your site into Google's free Search Console, verify it, submit your sitemap and see your Google results in SEOFIX.

Google Search Console is Google's free tool that shows which searches bring people to your site, how often you appear, and whether Google can read all your pages. SEOFIX walks you through it click by click — open your site, then Google Search Console in the sidebar. The steps there are tailored to your website builder; the general version is below.

Step 1: Have a Google account

Search Console is free — you just need a Google account. Already use Gmail, YouTube or Google Business Profile? You have one: mark this step done.

  1. 1Go to accounts.google.com/signup.
  2. 2Enter your name, then your birthday.
  3. 3Choose Use your existing email to sign up with your business email (or create a new Gmail address).
  4. 4Create a password and confirm your email or phone number with the code Google sends you.
Use an account your business will keep — if you use an agency or employee's account, you'll lose access when they leave. You can add teammates later in Search Console → Settings → Users and permissions.

Step 2: Add your website to Search Console

We recommend a Domain property: it covers every version of your site (with and without www, http and https).

  1. 1Go to search.google.com/search-console and sign in.
  2. 2Click Add property (top-left menu) — or Start now if it's your first time.
  3. 3On the left, under Domain, type yourbusiness.com (copy below) and click Continue.
  4. 4Leave the next window open — it shows the record you'll add in the next step.

Step 3: Prove you own the site (add one DNS record)

Google shows a TXT record starting with google-site-verification=. You add it where your domain name is managed (where you bought it: GoDaddy, Namecheap, Hostinger, Cloudflare, Google/Squarespace Domains…).

  1. 1In Search Console's verification window, click Copy next to the TXT record.
  2. 2If Google offers Start verification for your domain company (e.g. GoDaddy), click it, sign in, and approve — done.
  3. 3Otherwise open your domain company's DNS settings (cPanel hosting: Zone Editor) and click Add record.
  4. 4Type: TXT. Host/Name: @. Value: paste the record. Save.
  5. 5Back in Search Console, click Verify. If it fails, wait 15–60 minutes (DNS takes time to update) and click Verify again.
Can't get into your DNS? Use a URL prefix property instead and add Google's HTML tag to your homepage's <head>.

Step 4: Tell Google about all your pages (submit your sitemap)

  1. 1In Search Console, pick your site in the top-left menu.
  2. 2Click Sitemaps in the left menu.
  3. 3In Add a new sitemap, paste your sitemap address (copy it below) and click Submit.
  4. 4Status Success means Google read it. Couldn't fetch is common on day one — check again tomorrow.

Step 5: Show your Google results inside SEOFIX (optional)

Optional, but recommended: SEOFIX reads your clicks, impressions, top searches and top pages (read-only — SEOFIX can't change anything in Search Console) and shows them next to your fixes.

  2. 2Choose the Google account you used for Search Console.
  3. 3Click Allow. You'll come straight back here.

Using Wix or Squarespace?

Both connect Search Console for you — they add your site, verify it and submit your sitemap in one go. SEOFIX shows the exact buttons when it detects your builder.

Proving ownership on WordPress

  1. 1Easiest: install the free Site Kit by Google plugin, click Start setup and sign in — it verifies your site and connects Search Console for you.
  2. 2Or, in Search Console's verification window, copy the HTML tag and paste the code into Yoast SEO → Settings → Site connections → Google, or Rank Math → General Settings → Webmaster Tools. Save.
  3. 3Back in Search Console, click Verify.

Proving ownership on Shopify

  1. 1In Search Console's verification window, open HTML tag and click Copy.
  2. 2In Shopify admin: Online Store → Themes → ⋯ → Edit code, open layout/theme.liquid.
  3. 3Paste the tag on a new line just above </head> and click Save.
  4. 4Back in Search Console, click Verify.

Proving ownership on Webflow

  1. 1In Search Console's verification window, open HTML tag and copy only the code inside content="…".
  2. 2In Webflow: Site settings → SEO → Google Site Verification, paste the code, Save, then Publish.
  3. 3Back in Search Console, click Verify.

Sites connected to SEOFIX (WordPress plugin or Next.js add-on)

  1. 1In Search Console's verification window, open HTML tag and click Copy.
  2. 2Paste it into the box below and click Save — SEOFIX adds it to your homepage within a minute.
  3. 3Back in Search Console, click Verify. You'll see Ownership verified.

How long until you see results

  • Ownership verified: Instantly, once Google sees your tag or DNS record (DNS: up to an hour)
  • Sitemap read: Minutes to 2 days
  • First search data (clicks & impressions): 2–3 days after verifying
  • New or fixed pages picked up: A few days to a few weeks (use URL Inspection → Request indexing for your most important page)
  • Ranking changes after SEO fixes: Usually 2–8 weeks
SEOFIX's Google connection is read-only: it can see your search data but can't change anything in Search Console. Disconnect it any time on the same page.
